The Physical Wellbeing 5 with Dr Lori Shemek, PhD

1. What is your favourite quote, anecdote, proverb or experience that helps with physical wellbeing?

Lori: Many people believe that food holds power over them, when in fact, it is the opposite. Unfortunately, many ascribe power to these foods and I often use my quote to remind people that:

“You control the food, not the other way around…”

2. What is your top piece of advice for physical wellbeing?

Lori: Small daily choices transform health such as liberally using herbs and spices at meals as they are very high in antioxidants and polyphenols. A small amount of herbs and spices exerts a powerful anti-inflammatory effect. Another small choice during the day is drinking water. This promotes energy, weight loss, reduces joint pain, prevents sugar cravings and promotes better cognition – no more foggy thinking. Drink half your body weight in ounces daily.

3. What is the one change in the world that you would like to see? (in your area of wellbeing or in the world in general or both)

Lori: The obesity and type 2 diabetes epidemic are killing people. My hope is that we can help educate everyone to ensure healthier choices are made to reverse these deadly metabolic diseases. Making simple changes can help those with the disease to optimize health. Another major source of the problem is the ubiquitous use of unhealthy, inflammatory refined oils such as soybean oil, vegetable oil etc. and sugar. These ingredients are added to most every packaged processed foods available.

4. Which resources (books / websites / videos etc) for physical wellbeing would you recommend?

Lori: There really are so many!  The Whole30 Program is an excellent resource for anyone wanting to change their health or weight. For science-based health information, HealthLine.com is excellent. For fitness, the app myfitnesspal.com is another excellent choice.

5. What’s the one thing that always makes you smile?

Lori: My sweet dog Tessa! She is a tall, 80 lb. 4 year old Goldendoodle.
