The Physical Wellbeing 5 with Gemma Harris

1. What is your favourite quote, anecdote, proverb or experience that helps with relationship wellbeing?

Gemma: Although not directly related to gut health, my favourite quote and something that I regularly share on The Gut Choice socials is: “Believe you can and you’re halfway there,” – Theodore Roosevelt. I believe that mindset is key in anything we want to achieve whether that’s a fitness goal, a dietary change to improve your gut health or hitting a work deadline. Gently, reminding yourself of this can be really helpful, especially in times of self-doubt.

2. What is your top piece of advice for relationship wellbeing?

Gemma: My top piece of advice if you’re looking to improve your physical and/or gut health is to plan your meals on a weekly basis. Sit down with a cuppa, pen and paper and list the nutritious and tasty meals you want to eat for the next week. This way, if you are feeling low or are in a rush, you’re less likely to go off track. It also frees up valuable thinking space, meaning your mind may feel clearer on a daily basis. What I would say though is be kind to yourself and don’t beat yourself up if you do give in and tuck into that chocolate cake. Nobody is perfect and that’s okay. 🙂

3. What is the one change in the world that you would like to see? (in your area of wellbeing or in the world in general or both)

Gemma: It would be great to see more nutritional guidance in the education curriculum so that kids can learn about how to look after their digestive health and why it’s important from a younger age.

Also, more kindness. If this year has taught us anything, it’s that we need to be kind to each other.

4. Which resources (books / websites / videos etc) for relationship wellbeing would you recommend?

Gemma: I would definitely recommend reading Self-Care for the Real World by wellness pioneers and sisters Nadia Narain and Katia Narain Phillips. I’ve never read a more practical guide that feels so easy to integrate into real life (as the name suggests). It’s a mixture of effective techniques for your mental wellbeing such as breathing exercises, techniques and recipes for your digestive health e.g. how to give yourself a stomach massage and just general life skills. I would also recommend checking out Yoga With Adriene’s YouTube videos; she has some really quick and effective yoga practices targeted at gut health and digestion. They are great for alleviating stress too. The meditation app Headspace is definitely worth downloading too for just pausing and taking some time to yourself each day.

5. What’s the one thing that always makes you smile?

Gemma: It sounds cringe, but my two adorable guinea pigs. Spending time with pets can be a great comfort and stress relief during difficult times. They also never judge you or expect anything from you.
