As a human we are blessed with a conscious, thinking mind. That blessing can be a curse if the thoughts never stop

Overthinking

Overthinking is defined as thinking about something too much and for too long. It is always good to consider situations and possibilities however sometimes overthinking negative thoughts can become overbearing and be detrimental to mental wellbeing. Why we do it, the negative effects and how we can stop it below.

Human life is complex. The amount of possibilities and choices we are faced with can lead to infinite ways of thinking and ultimately overthinking. We can overthink because;

  1. Too many possibilities to consider
  2. Trying to find reason in situations and people
  3. Confusion or doubt
  4. Too many outcomes from a given situation 
  5. Excessive worry
  6. Being unable to accept the truth
  7.  Thinking “what if” about past and potential future experiences 
  8. Looking for answers
  9. Inability to prioritise
  10. Attempting to be “in control”
  11. Wanting to change and not feeling able to do so
  12. Being unsure about what we want
  13. Not being able to share thoughts with others
  14. Fear of the past, present or future
  15. Constantly imagining a different reality
  16. Inability to make decisions
  17. Not trusting own decisions
  18. Over analysing situations and people
  19. Constant rumination
  20. Insecurity in relation to a job or a relationship or life in general

20 Negative Effects Of Overthinking

 Overthinking isn’t always bad however persistent negative or unhelpful thoughts can have a detrimental effect to mental and physical wellbeing including;
  1. Anxiety – Overthinking can make us anxious
  2. Depression – Too many negative thoughts can lead us to be depressed
  3. Misery
  4. Exhaustion
  5. Confusion
  6. Procrastination
  7. Frustration
  8. Addictive tendencies
  9. Stems creativity
  10. Insomnia 
  11. Hampers productivity and problem solving abilities
  12. Lowered energy levels
  13. Inability to concentrate
  14. Can push people to negative habits such as drinking or drugs in order to “escape”
  15. Lack of motivation
  16. Removing joy and fun from a moment by thinking about it too much
  17. Little things that don’t really matter can turn into huge overwhelming issues
  18. Or overthinking positive things can make them look not so positive anymore
  19. Fear about the future or past
  20. Lowered appetite

40 Ways To Stop Overthinking

Stopping overthinking starts with realising that you are doing it. There are then many strategies you can put in place to help stop. These include;

  1. Observe yourself and notice when you are overthinking. This is the first step to being able to solve the problem
  2. Meditate to calm the mind (try here)
  3. Exercise – the endorphins released will put you in a positive frame of mind
  4. Eat healthily 
  5. Take yourself into nature and away from day to day life (try forest bathing here)
  6. Practice mindfulness and be in the present moment. Take time to see, hear and generally observe the things around you
  7. Pay attention to your thoughts and thought processes
  8. Allow yourself to express your emotions
  9. Set a time limit to make decisions
  10. Don’t bottle things up
  11. Be grateful
  12. Put things into perspective – Ask yourself if what you are overthinking really matters
  13. Practice breathing exercises (try here)
  14. Don’t worry about things that you cannot control
  15. Talk things through with yourself – talk or at least write things down
  16. Make a journal or log to record your thoughts
  17. Get organised – plan your day. This will take a lot of stress and potential overthinking situations away
  18. Practice positive self talk – be supportive of yourself
  19. Celebrate your successes and the things you are proud of
  20. Change your mindset – Be more optimistic. Think of what can go right instead of going wrong
  21. Talk things through with a trusted friend or relative
  22. Concentrate on problem solving rather than dwelling on problems
  23. Accept what has or is going to happen and move on
  24. Surround yourself with positive thinking people
  25. Accept that you have done your best and that is the most anyone can do
  26. Set time aside in a day where you allow yourself to think & reflect and train yourself to keep it to just that time 
  27. Find a distraction whether speaking to a friend or family member or getting busy with a hobby or work 
  28. Take a break from technological distractions and social media
  29. Look at things from other’s point of view
  30. Understand that life will go on and no decision is ever final
  31. Focus on small steps and the next best action rather than trying to consider everything at once
  32. Go through with the action – make things happen rather than think about them
  33. Learn to practice forgiveness and let go fo grudges
  34. Understand the negative effects that overthinking is having on you and use it to motivate you to stop
  35. Relax your mind. Imagine yourself in a place that is special to you
  36. Understand that can’t control other people’s thoughts or actions
  37. Do something nice for others and spread love (try here)
  38. Also understand that you cannot predict, or to a certain extent control the future
  39. Don’t expect perfection – there is no such thing
  40. If the thoughts are too much or too negative get some professional help. There are many trained counsellors or therapists who will be able to help
