The Mental Wellbeing 5 with Dr. Nic Hooper

1. What is your favourite quote, anecdote, proverb or experience that helps with mental wellbeing?

Nic:

I’m not afraid of storms, for I am learning how to sail my ship” Louisa May Alcott.

2. What is your top piece of advice for mental wellbeing?

Nic:

“Unwanted thoughts and feelings will come and go like the clouds as we dance our way through life. Often people think that such experiences need to disappear before a good life can be lived, and thus do harmful things in an attempt to avoid them. My advice is simple; when the clouds come, hold your discomfort and keep your feet moving as best as you can towards the things that are important to you.”

3. What is the one change in the world that you would like to see? (in your area of wellbeing or in the world in general or both)

Nic:

“I’d like conceptualisations of mental health to have a stronger contextual focus. Past and present experiences matter, so let’s stop placing blame at the door of afflicted individuals because of supposed biological or cognitive deficiencies and instead appreciate that context plays an important role in the development of psychopathology, and that intervention efforts should therefore focus on changing the context”.

4. Which resources (books / websites / videos etc) for wellbeing would you recommend?

Nic:

Acceptance and Commitment Therapy: An Experiential Approach to Behaviour Change” by Steven Hayes, Kelly Wilson and Kirk Strosahl.
The Happiness Trap” by Russ Harris.
The Anatomy of an Epidemic” by Robert Whitaker.
Beyond Freedom and Dignity” by B.F. Skinner.

5. What’s the one thing that always makes you smile?

Nic:

Scoring a nice goal while playing football.
