The Wellbeing 5 with Elena Katsandreas
1. What is your favourite quote, anecdote, proverb or experience that helps with mental wellbeing?
Elena: “Don’t use your energy to worry. Use your energy to believe, create, trust, grow and heal”
2. What is your top piece of advice for mental wellbeing?
Elena: You have to get good at self talk. There are always going to be the voices in your head telling you certain things/ making you feel certain ways (and they are normally always negative). You have to learn how to control this and turn things around into the positive. I created this sheet to help people and I think it’s a good fit here. The idea is you use these like mantras: you take yourself into a virtual time out, you say them to yourself (and out loud if you can, it’s so much more powerful) and you repeat as often as necessary;
3. What is the one change in the world that you would like to see? (in your area of wellbeing or in the world in general or both)
Elena: More thought for others. Think about the impact of what you’re going to say and how you’re going to say it. Think about the impact of what you’re going to do and why are you doing it? When you think about impact and not just what you want, it changes how you see things and I’d love to see people doing that more.
4. Which resources (books / websites / videos etc) for wellbeing would you recommend?
Elena: I think this would depend on the kind of person you are and how you like to develop/ support yourself and of course the situation you find yourself in, but my top recommendations would usually include:
- Build a support network around you (and this might include the support of a coach/ mentor/ counsellor);
- Use social media for support – for example Facebook has lots of groups where people might have shared experiences, Pinterest has great quotes & ideas for inspiration/ motivation;
- Read books – The Power of Acceptance by Annemarie Postma is a great one;
- Watch – Youtube/ Ted talks. These offer access to specialists, experts and lots of advice & guidance for free.
5. What’s the one thing that always makes you smile?
Elena: One thing? That’s tough, I smile a lot! The ultimate for me is probably other people being happy – hearing laughter, seeing affection, being able to feel someones joy, sense of achievement, relief. It’s magical.
