The Mental Wellbeing 5 with Joan Beckett

1. What is your favourite quote, anecdote, proverb or experience that helps with mental wellbeing?

Joan:

·       Two Khalil Gibran quotes:

o   Out of suffering have emerged the strongest souls; the most massive characters are seared with scars.

o   Your daily life is your temple and your religion. When you enter into it, take with you your all.

·       Simple, but so appropriate. The Golden Rule: Do unto others as you would have them do unto you. (As a reminder, I have a poster on my office wall of the mosaic at the United Nations that has this quote.)

o   I believe this helps with mental wellbeing because it nudges us away from reactivity in situations and invites us into empathy and understanding.

·       “Toto,…we’re not in Kansas anymore”

o   This is a reminder to me that Life is very different than what most of us perceive it to be on the surface and if we can remember our place and purpose in Life (as explained in The One Hour Miracle) it can help us weather the challenges with courage, grace and equanimity.

2. What is your top piece of advice for mental wellbeing?

Joan:

Whenever you are suffering and feel overwhelmed and consumed by it, notice that it is not all of who you are. There is the one observing what is happening. Just noticing this can give you a small amount of space and relief while giving you room to think/feel/be with the experience.

3. What is the one change in the world that you would like to see? (in your area of wellbeing or in the world in general or both)

Joan:

·       Respect for each other and the value of human life

·       A world free of human trafficking

4. Which resources (books / websites / videos etc) for wellbeing would you recommend?

Joan:

·       The One Hour Miracle (of course!) by Andrew Hahn and Joan Beckett

·       Anatomy of the spirit by Caroline Myss

·       Proof of heaven by Even Alexander

·       The Enneagram by Helen Palmer

5. What’s the one thing that always makes you smile?

Joan:

·       When I realize I am in the present moment and am experiencing gratitude for the bounty of Life rather than focusing on what seems wrong. (If this happens it usually is when I am out for a walk in the beautiful seaside town in which I live.)

·       Steinbeck, our dog, when she is wagging

·       German chocolate cake

Bonus Question! Is there anything else pertinent you would like to add to the conversation?

Joan:

·       This feels really important. When something challenging happens, to stop and ask, “What am I being invited to learn here? I believe with all my heart that that is the constant invitation from Life – to heal and grow – from the simplest problem to the most excruciating, heart-crushing difficult circumstances.
