The Mental Wellbeing 5 with Kathy Kolbe

1. What is your favourite quote, anecdote, proverb or experience that helps with mental wellbeing?

Kathy:

My answer is one of my 5 Rules for Trusting your instincts (which I try to follow):

Do Nothing – when Nothing Works

2. What is your top piece of advice for mental wellbeing?

Kathy:

Again, one of my 5 Rules:

Be Obstinate in Being You

This gives many people a lot to figure out before being able to act on it.

3. What is the one change in the world that you would like to see? (in your area of wellbeing or in the world in general or both)

Kathy:

So-called experts need to stop idealizing some human traits, and giving courses on changing people in order to conform to their models. Instead, help people by encouraging them to Be yourself- don’t try to be like anyone else – which builds self-efficacy and creates realistic Purposefulness.

4. Which resources (books / websites / videos etc) for wellbeing would you recommend?

Kathy:

Your grandparent is probably your best advisor! But, as an 82 yr old grandma, I may be way too prejudiced about the value of life-long experience.

5. What’s the one thing that always makes you smile?

Kathy:

Other peoples’ smiles
     Little kids’ chatter
     Music of all kinds
     …and oxymorons

Bonus Question! Is there anything else pertinent you would like to add to the conversation?

Kathy:

I find it helps change peoples’ internal dialog from negativity to greater positivity to ask:
What are you grateful for having in your life?

I encourage building a list of opportunities/things/people/experiences for which a person is grateful – especially during this pandemic.
