1. What is your favourite quote, anecdote, proverb or experience that helps with mental wellbeing?

Laura: I really like the concept of Nietzsche’s “the love of your fate.” Joseph Campbell explains it beautifully, “At a certain moment in Nietzsche’s life, the idea came to him of what he called “the love of your fate.” Whatever your fate is, whatever the heck happens, you say, “This is what I need.” It may look like a wreck, but go at it as though it were an opportunity, a challenge. If you bring love to that moment—not discouragement— you will find the strength is there. Any disaster that you can survive is an improvement in your character, your stature, and your life. What a privilege! This is when the spontaneity of your own nature will have a chance to flow. Then, when looking back at your life, you will see that the moments which seemed to be great failures followed by wreckage were the incidents that shaped the life you have now. You’ll see that this is really true. Nothing can happen to you that is not positive. Even though it looks and feels at the moment like a negative crisis, it is not.”

I realize this idea may not resonate with everyone and for every situation. However, this quote has helped me overcome some very dark times in my life. When I was down and felt defeated, I would think of this quote. It allowed me to step back from what was happening and what was making me feel down and look at it as just an experience, neither bad nor good. When I considered what lessons I could learn from a situation it helped me become stronger. This can sometimes be hard to do, and you have to consciously make the choice to try to think differently about a situation that is defeating you. I have lived through some very bad things in life, things that could have defeated me, but I choose to rise above and become a stronger person because of my experiences.

2. What is your top piece of advice for mental wellbeing?

Laura: Have a trusted friend or family member that you have a ‘help’ safe word with. What I mean by this is, when you are feeling down or suffering with terrible depression it is hard to ask for help. Saying to a friend or family member, “Hey, I’m depressed right now and don’t know what to do, can you help?” is impossible for a person who is in a depressive state. When you are able to talk to someone about suffering from depression or even just being down, find a friend or family member that you trust and set up a thing you will say that they will know you need them. For example, I have a friend who when I text and ask if she wants to go for ‘fries and gravy’ she knows I’m asking for her help. She will make sure to make time to come and be with me or take me out. When I am down it is much easier to text ‘fries and gravy’ than it is to say, “Hey, I’m feeling down right now. Can you help me?”

3. What is the one change in the world that you would like to see? (in your area of wellbeing or in the world in general or both)

Laura: I want to see greater strides towards destigmatizing mental health issues. I know we are moving in the right direction but there is still a long way to go. There are still people who think mental health issues are ‘in your head’ and people should be able to ‘get over it.’ There are still too many people afraid to ask for help for fear of being judged. If you have a broken arm you wouldn’t hesitate to go to the hospital for help. I want people to view mental health in the same way. If you need help you should be able to get it, judgement free.

4. Which resources (books / websites / videos etc) for wellbeing would you recommend?

Laura: I love watching and listening to TedTalks- https://www.ted.com/talks I feel inspired by people who have interesting ideas. When I feel inspired it helps my mental wellbeing.

5. What’s the one thing that always makes you smile?

Laura: My children. They are such kind, compassionate and loving humans. I feel blessed that I had a part in bringing these two lights into the world.
