Támara Hill bio

The Mental Wellbeing 5 with Támara Hill

1. What is your favourite quote, anecdote, proverb or experience that helps with mental wellbeing?

Támara: I was raised in a Christian home and learned Joshua 1:9 (New International Version) very early. I love “Be Strong & Courageous. Do not be afraid or discouraged….”

2. What is your top piece of advice for mental wellbeing?

Támara: Rise above the chaos. Daily life, relationship challenges, mood fluctuations, and life transitions can all be chaotic experiences that can lead to acute or chronic stress, depression, anxiety, and even PTSD. Learning how to go through these common life experiences and then rise above them is an important skill. Rising above the chaos may entail distancing from certain relationships, learning coping skills, making healthier decisions, seeking out psychotherapy, and/or praying or meditating more.

3. What is the one change in the world that you would like to see? (in your area of wellbeing or in the world in general or both)

Támara: Originality and authenticity. Although it may sound cliché, it’s something I don’t see a lot of in today’s world. One session, with one of my teen clients, we decided to pull up social media. I remember looking at all of the photos and videos (reels, Instagram posts, YouTube shorts, etc.) and feeling a sense of unease because of the vanity and shallow engagement that came across the screen. For the most part, social media is a “false reality” or lie. It looks one way to people who desire a particular lifestyle or who fantasize about “celebrities.” The damage these social media posts can cause is major.

4. Which resources (books / websites / videos etc) for wellbeing would you recommend?

Támara: I like The Body Keeps Score by Dr. Van der Kolk (which speaks to the physiological and emotional experience of trauma) and The Whole Body Guide To Gut Health by Heidi Moretti (which speaks to the connection between mind and body).

5. What’s the one thing that always makes you smile?

Támara: Babies and children. They are the most innocent thing upon the face of the earth. No biases, no prejudices, no hang-ups, no self-esteem challenges, etc. They are pure and untouched by the experience of life. They come into the world with an open heart and an open mind.

Bonus Question! Is there anything else pertinent you would like to add to the conversation?

Támara: Since the start of COVID I have observed many changes in our society and among humans. I’m seeing more frustration, anger, emotional detachment, and fear more now than ever before. I encourage whoever is reading this to pause and ask themselves this one question: “Am I contributing to the anger in the world or being an example of peace?” I try to ask myself this question as a reminder to contribute in positive ways.
