The outdoors, nature, fresh air, sunshine, the countryside. Multiple studies have proven that getting outdoors is good for our mental and physical wellbeing. In modern society, people spend a vast amount of their lives indoors so how does can getting out there help us and what are things we can do outdoors?

11 Ways Being Outdoors Help Our Mental & Physical Wellbeing

1. Exercise

Generally when we are outdoors we are doing some form of exercise whether it be playing sport or just going for an amble to the shop. Exercise releases endorphins which naturally boost our both our mental and physical wellbeing

2. Sunshine

Sunshine provides us with vitamin D which helps regulate calcium and phosphate. This in turn keeps our bones, skin and muscles healthy. Exposure to sunlight also releases serotonin which naturally makes us feel better

3. Taking a break – Reducing the Stress

4. Help with Anxiety and Depression

Researchers at Stanford conducted a study allowing a group of depression patients to spend more time outdoors. Results presented a positive improvement in levels of anxiety and depression for that group as compared to another group that stayed indoors. 5. Boost Your Mood & Happiness

Sunlight and fresh air enhance our wellbeing and boost our mood. Just being in a natural setting can put us in a positive frame of mind and increase our happiness levels

6. Socialising

Getting outdoors can mean that we meet other people. Growing our network friends and acquaintances helps boost our mood and gives us many other benefits including; preventing loneliness, giving a sense of purpose and improved self confidence

7. A Break From Screens

Modern society and culture spend a vast amount of time in front of screens whether it be computer screens, phones or tablets. Getting out into nature can take us away from that over stimulation and in turn provide us with some well needed downtime  

8. Higher Levels of Creativity

Being out in nature, increases our level of creativity. The more sights, sounds and colours of nature we take in, the more creative we become

What are some simple activities that can be done outdoors and help us boost our mental and physical wellbeing?

  1. Walking – Going for a walk in nature can be a great stress reliever 
  2. Hiking – Pack your bag, get your hiking gear on and get out outdoors
  3. Cycling – Go for a bike ride or cycle to work
  4. Gardening – Getting green fingers is a great way to get back to nature, get fresh air and some light exercise
  5. Volunteer Outdoors – Finding a volunteering opportunity, can both rewarding and good for our mental wellbeing. Try a google search to see what you can find
  6. Running – Get your running trainers on and get out for run
  7. Sports – There are a plethora of sports that can be done in the fresh air from kicking a ball around to playing a team sport with friends
  8. Eat Outdoors – Try some al fresco living and eat lunch or dinner outdoors. Have a picnic in the park, have a bbq friends or just have a nice dinner on the patio or in the garden
  9. Work Outside – Even if you work with a laptop, try spending some time working outdoors to give yourself a boost
  10. Take The Kids Out For An Adventure – There are so many fun things kids can do outside; build a fort, hunt bugs, go fishing, build a snowman, play sport.. see below for further suggestions
  11. Take your (or the neighbours) dog for a walk – Good for you and man’s (or woman’s!) best friend
