The Sleep Wellbeing 5 with Seth Davis

1. What is your favourite quote, anecdote, proverb or experience that helps with sleep wellbeing?

Seth: “Happiness is waking up, looking at the clock and finding that you still have two hours left to sleep.” – Charles M. Schulz. I like this quote because it shows a great attitude toward sleep. Some people might become angry or frustrated in that situation, but he’s excited about the opportunity to complete his night of healthy sleep. Although … I wouldn’t recommend clock-watching during the night.

2. What is your top piece of advice for sleep wellbeing?

Seth: The word “routine” might sound boring, but it can be your friend when it comes to sleep. Your body and brain like to have a firm idea of when it’s time to sleep and when it’s time to wake up and face the day. Without routine and consistency, you’re keeping your biological systems guessing from day to day and that can contribute to poor sleep.

3. What is the one change in the world that you would like to see? (in your area of wellbeing or in the world in general or both)

Seth: I would like to see more people pausing in the middle of their days to meditate, be physically active, or even just purposely do nothing. We don’t give ourselves permission to take breaks often enough even though it provides rejuvenation to keep us sharp and prevent burnout.

4. Which resources (books / websites / videos etc) for sleep wellbeing would you recommend?

Seth: I love the book The Sleep Solution by W. Chris Winter because it makes sleep science relatable and interesting, while infusing the topic with humor. I’m also a fan of The Effortless Sleep Method by Sasha Stephens because she offers her own take on standard sleep advice with a no-nonsense demeanor.

5. What’s the one thing that always makes you smile?

Seth: Watching my young children play and sleep. Their shoulders are free from the weight of the world, which means they are free to live without worry and to sleep without heavy thoughts on their minds. It makes me happy knowing that they’re enjoying this beautifully simple time in their lives!

One bonus question, is there anything else pertinent you would like to add to the conversation?

Seth: Your relationship with sleep is what you make of it, whether it’s dysfunctional or a lifelong pleasure. You just need to start learning to work with sleep rather than against it.
