The Mental Wellbeing 5 with Nyle Beck

1. What is your favourite quote, anecdote, proverb or experience that helps with mental wellbeing?

Nyle: There was a memorable quote I heard back in my early twenties, when I was (on the one hand), on a successful career path, proud of my accomplishments, constantly connecting with and surrounded by lots of friends & loved ones, at the peak of my physical fitness, and I felt like a million dollars (in the physical sense); while (on the other hand) I was also really struggling with my self esteem internally in a big way, and was completely without boundaries at the time, which led to a string of unhealthy “love-relationships” and risky behaviours.

This quote that really stayed with me was:

“Don’t compete, don’t compare, and don’t judge.”

This has been an ongoing motto in my life, and I practice it daily in how I strive to refrain from competing with, comparing to & judging, both myself and others. We all have a unique path and therefore not one of us is exactly like another. We tend to become conditioned in our society that we need to be like other people, look like other people, talk like other people, live like other people, love like other people, define success like other people, have the same opinions as other people, and the list goes on. This is nothing shy of a mind trap, a set of limiting beliefs, and a sure way to reduce our self esteem and live out of alignment. So this quote really puts things in a perspective that takes work, but is rather freeing.

2. What is your top piece of advice for mental wellbeing?

Nyle: Right now, it’s my pinned tweet:

“Please take care of your world inside of you, so that you can take care of your world outside of you.”

But of course there’s so much about this that needs to be unpacked. If I were to nutshell it, I’d say that I believe that inner work and shadow work, (which are essentially another way of describing the Emotional Intelligence coaching work I do with clients, with perhaps some different methods) are essential starting points for anyone and everyone to really understand themselves and heal any parts of themselves that are holding them back, keeping them small, or stopping them from living their truth. This work involves self-reflective processes that include a deep dive into ourselves, our thoughts, feelings, words, behaviours, patterns, mindsets, biases, mental models, and more, that help us explore who we really are and why we think, believe, say and do what we do and how we do what we do, so that we can reveal our blindspots, clear and release anything from our inner world that no longer serves, and really step into our power. We need to be able to face ourselves in order to truly be ourselves and dowhat we are here to do.

And as the second part of the tweet shows, it is equally important to be aware of, and take care of “the world outside” of us and authentically help others (I’m not talking about people pleasing) by sharing the gifts that are inside of us to share (I’m talking about the talents, skills, abilities, expressions, our creative offerings that we each have within us to offer others, and our unique expressions of our humanity and love). We are a social species, and to the extent that we are uniquely designed to be social, we must remember that we need each other and we have opportunities to serve humanity through authentic giving.

3. What is the one change in the world that you would like to see? (in your area of wellbeing or in the world in general or both)

Nyle: One change that I would like to see is that people “return to themselves”, trust their intuition and instincts, instead of being pulled in different directions by the many distractions and external voices we hear on a daily basis that tell us all what to think and how to behave.

I think the world has advanced technologically in so many ways that have sped up how we live our lives, which has been transformative and positive in many ways. However, the challenge in this is that it has been difficult for many people to find ways to slow down, be present in the moment, listen to their bodies’ responses to the many circumstances outside of themselves (when it would benefit them to do so), calm their nervous system enough to relax (which we need more often), and reconnect with their hearts.

Also, I’ve observed that too many people are dwelling for too long in stressed, anxious, depressed, bitter, blaming and shaming states of being. We’ve seen this amplified especially through this pandemic, which has resulted in a normalization of many people ruminating and holding onto stressful thoughts and stories, as well as a normalization of reduced critical thinking, out of control groupthink, overtaxed nervous systems, and an increased lack of empathy in the world.

4. Which resources (books / websites / videos etc) for wellbeing would you recommend?

Nyle:

Websites & videos:

Eckhart Tolle has helpful free teachings and videos about mindfulness. https://eckharttolle.com/free-resources/

Chopra.com also has good articles like: https://chopra.com/articles/10-ways-to-de-stress-your-mind-and-body

And my own website is going to be launched soon! I plan to have lots of content about ways we can work on our mental/emotional health on my blog, YouTube channel, and monthly newsletter, which will both be accessible on my website.

Apps:

Calm app – has beautiful meditations, talks, sounds and images that help you decompress, relax and reset your nervous system. When you first open the app it always tells you before anything else to take a deep breath (the BEST advice in any moment in my opinion).

Headspace and Lumosity, among others are also helpful for basic information, tips and guided meditations.

Music: There are many accounts on YouTube featuring relaxing, high frequency meditation-music curated specifically for healing, such as “Healing Meditation”, “Music for Body & Spirit – Meditation Music”, “ZenLifeRelax” and others. Listening to music that you resonate with and that evokes emotions and movement, is always a good thing, whether you shed tears, sing along, or start dancing. All of these body responses also moveour emotions inside of us, which is a critical part of processing our emotions. And “e-motions” are absolutely meant to move through us so they don’t get stuck, or become attached to our thoughts and turn into “stories” that we might come to believe (which then can turn into limiting beliefs we hold).

Books: There are sooo many, and it’s very hard to narrow it down, as there are so many different approaches and styles of attending to our mental health, depending on our life experiences, our circumstances, our needs, our overall health, and our inner world. But a couple of my favourites are:

The Stress-Proof Brain, by Melanie Greenberg, Ph.D, offers so much information about how we experience stress consciously and unconsciously, along with tools on how to deal with, reduce and prevent stress.

Breathe: The New Science of a Lost Art, by James Nestor – We all have to breathe! And we can benefit sooo much by getting more conscious about our breathing practices. For example, it’s well-documented that deep breathing can literally reduce anxiety and stress, and help you release negative energy instead of storing it in your body. This book tells you everything you would likely ever want to know about breathing (and more!). It has great techniques, well-researched technical information and ideas trickled throughout the book on how breathing can optimize your health.

The Power of Intention, by Dr. Wayne W. Dyer – This book helps people look at life through the lens of being empowered, having choice and agency. It discusses how we prepare ourselves from within for a purpose-driven life, a life of self-awareness, self-love, gratitude, inner peace, inner freedom, and intention that is driven from within. It’s a solid go-to for anyone looking to clarify their reason for “being”, and consciously, authentically and actively live life here and now.

And an endearing children’s book (but it’s really for all ages) that is also a very quick (10 minute read): The Boy, The Mole, The Fox and the Horse by Charles Mackery is an uplifting story about some important life lessons about: love, trust, compassion, gratitude, mindfulness, integrity and character. It highlights some of life’s challenges and provides compassionate perspectives and solutions.

But the most important resources, in my opinion, are free. Here are a few key ones:

  • Breathing exercises
  • Movement, exercise, dance
  • Laughter
  • Enough good quality sleep
  • Nature: a walk in the forest, on a beach, in a garden, or any form of nature that you can access (even if it’s just standing on the earth outside in your bare feet, or gently touching a tree, plant, stone, shells, or one of the many treasures from nature can bring instant mindfulness and calm).
  • And human touch and connection with our trusted loved ones is incredibly healing.

5. What’s the one thing that always makes you smile?

Nyle: My golden retriever ALWAYS make me smile. There isn’t a moment that goes by when I think of her that doesn’t bring a smile to my face. She embodies love and gratitude and it’s the most beautiful thing to witness. She’s an adorable, playful, graceful, joyful, loving creature who truly lives in the moment and cherishes each moment to the fullest possible extent. I believe we all can learn from these beautiful animals about gratitude and being present.

Bonus Question! Is there anything else pertinent you would like to add to the conversation?

Nyle: Yes! I would just like to add that I am incredibly grateful for this opportunity to contribute to the work that you are doing. It is very important work and mental health & wellbeing is a key part of everyone’s lives on this planet that must be attended to and cared for every day. Thank you so very much!
